What Does Sustainability in Education Look Like?

Promoting environmental sustainability in the education system is a great way to make the world a more sustainable place for all. This article will explain why sustainability is so important in education and ways to make schools more sustainable for teachers, students, and school communities.

Why is Sustainability Important in Education?

Sustainability is important in education because it affects not just schools but also the world surrounding them. It teaches members of the school community (especially students) environmental literacy, including the importance of the planet’s health and the dangers of environmental issues such as climate change.

In addition, it emphasizes the power of the individual in helping the planet. Anyone can be an environmental change agent, even through actions that may seem small. It only takes one person to start the change, but when more people work together, it can create considerable impacts.

It is crucial for everyone to be actively involved in helping the Earth’s environment because of the threats that environmental issues pose to all life on Earth. For school teachers, staff, and faculty, this means serving as mentors for students and inspiring them to take action in their communities to support the Earth’s health. In doing so, they ensure that the Earth is in good condition to support the lives of not only present generations but generations to come.

4 Ways to Make Schools More Sustainable

Here are some ways to make schools more sustainable for teachers, students, and school communities:

  • Reuse paper and other recyclable items. Setting an example for students and encouraging recycling in classrooms and other school areas will encourage students to recycle in places outside of school, which is just one way that they can help the environment.
  • Practice energy efficiency and encourage students to do the same. This includes turning off lights and electronics when not in use and being conscious of how much energy is being consumed among students in staff. Reducing energy usage can help fight the school’s carbon footprint, working against climate change.
  • Educate students on environmental issues and ways they can help. Doing this in fun and exciting ways will especially motivate students to fight for a more sustainable world. In addition, encourage students to ask questions about these issues so that they better understand why it is important to be environmental activists.
  • Donate money, books, and other educational resources. Many schools and educational programs can use these resources to enhance the educational experience for students.

The Wildlife Warriors: Saving Their Habitats

No Limit International is dedicated to promoting sustainability in education as part of its mission and goals. One way is through “The Wildlife Warriors: Saving Their Habitats,” a children’s book written and illustrated by No Limit International Co-Founder Orlyola Tantchou. The book warns about the dangers of climate change and inspires the youth to take action in their communities in order to create a more sustainable world.

“The Wildlife Warriors: Saving Their Habitats” has already impacted various schools worldwide, including a string of local elementary schools in El Paso, Texas. Through classroom readings and environmental education, the book is helping children to become change agents (or “wildlife warriors”) in their communities and the world.
