No Limit International Promotes Water Safety and Education Through Swimming Programs and FECANAS Partnership

No Limit International promotes water safety and education in two major ways: through its water safety programs and its partnership with FECANAS, Cameroon’s national swimming and rescue federation.

Importance of Water Safety Programs in Healthy Living and Youth Development

Drowning is one of the leading causes of death around the world, especially in children. About ten people die from unintentional drowning every day, and of these, two are children under the age of 14. The World Health Organization (WHO) lists Africa as having the highest rate of drowning in the world, with the region accounting for 20% of drownings worldwide.

“These statistics are alarming,” says Orlyanka Tantchou, Co-Founder of non-government organization (NGO) No Limit International, “and with the drowning rates on the rise on the coasts of Cameroon in cities such as Kribi, we felt it was important to implement water safety programs in partnership with the Cameroon Swimming and Lifesaving Federation. Part of our mission at No Limit International is to improve the health and living conditions of the population. By increasing water safety programs in the community, we help newbies in the swimming world acquire skills and competencies that can not only save their lives but also those of others around them as well. We want to promote swimming not only as a recreational activity but also as a skill that saves lives. That’s our first objective.”

Swimming is also an Olympic sport that can provide to the youth excellent opportunities to gain confidence, learn self-discipline, and participate in competitive swimming at the national and even international levels. “Our second objective,” Orlyanka states, “is to empower the youth to enjoy swimming as a sport and also encourage the young stars in the swimming clubs by equipping them with first-class swimming gears that will help them swim faster.”

What is FECANAS? (Cameroon Swimming and Rescue Federation)

FECANAS stands for Fédération Camerounaise de Natation et de Sauvetage, or the Cameroon Swimming and Rescue Federation. FECANAS is an official organization of the Cameroonian government and the International Life Saving Federation (ILSF) that works to increase swimming rates in Cameroon and give Cameroonian athletes opportunities to participate in top international competitions.

No Limit International is an official sponsor of FECANAS, helping the swimming organization to bring water safety and education to as many people in Cameroon as possible. FECANAS provides many swimming resources to the Cameroonian population, including swimming equipment, facilities, and even a Semi-Olympic swimming pool.

Community Impact

Over the years, No Limit International’s efforts have impacted the population of Cameroon for the better, especially the youth. The non-government organization organizes its water safety programs every 3 to 5 months, meaning participants can practice and develop their swimming skills year-round. These programs give swimmers of all levels the opportunity to discover water and engage in fun activities that teach them fundamentals of swimming—and most importantly, remove the fear of water. Learning to swim is a life-or-death skill, and it continues to prove essential for every child.

No Limit International has supported numerous swimming seasons with FECANAS and donated essential swimming equipment to the organization so that it can better accommodate its swimmers. In addition, No Limit International sponsors FECANAS’s swim meets every September, during which competitors can showcase their swimming skills and support each other in a welcoming and comfortable environment.

Through its community initiatives, No Limit International aims to bridge the minority swimming gap and diversify the sport. Especially in places like Cameroon, swimming and rescue is less cherished than other sport disciplines, but it still continues to prove advantageous for all people.
